Worms

All Lita saw was a pair of red eyes bearing down on her. Her lungs seized, not allowing her to suck in a much-needed gulp of air. The male who’d hit her, held her down with one hand, and pulled back his other in a fist.

Lita took a breath just as his fist came down on her face, connecting with an audible pop. The all-consuming pain made her shrink back as the bastard pulled back another fist. Twisting, she pulled at his anchored wrist and sank her teeth in just as another hit knocked her head to the wet, soppy ground.

Tears didn’t bother trickling out; they free-flowed with a rush. The male took a handful of her hair, pulled, and then smashed her face into the cold, watered-down soil that smelled rotten. Creepy crawlies skidded over her face.

She desperately tried to push herself up, but the male was bigger and stronger. Sharp claws stabbed into her upper back, ripping down her shirt and piercing skin. Lita screamed, taking in a mouthful of liquid bog. Her lungs were hurting, and she tried to fight against the Boore’s hold, but her efforts were in vain.

The weight atop her evaporated with a tormented war cry that she recognized as Nilly’s. This time, Lita didn’t feel any regret watching the death of the male who had attacked her. The sting in her back was bad, but the red eyes and shadows standing nearby made Lita pull out her emergency wallet, flip out her thumb-sized knife, and hold it up.

The sudden clasp around her upper arm made Lita turn to stab the attacker. Only she found Nilly with a black, mud-covered face. The female ignored the small knife and pulled Lita back until she was behind the female. Then they slowly backed up towards the trees.

As Lita backed up, she felt small prickles on her back, and then a heavy suction along her spine. “What the hell?” she said, swiping her arms behind her.

Nilly turned and sliced the air, and a thick, rubbery tree branch covered in small needles flopped over her shoulder. A smelly, rancid ooze dropped from the cut part of the tree, and Lita had to hold her breath to keep from breathing the smell in.

Nilly moved behind her and pried the thing from her back, but even when it was removed, Lita still felt pricks in her skin. She tried to explain, but Nilly covered her mouth and half-dragged and pushed her through the bloodsucking tree with its long, swaying branches.

She crawled on her elbows, digging into the wet ground that was cold enough to numb her fingers. Nilly led the way, snarling something and continuously looking left and right. Lita, on the other hand, didn’t look anywhere but at Nilly’s bare feet.

Past the swinging branches, Nilly slowed and sniffed the air, then pulled Lita close and pointed to a flat… “What the hell is that?”

Nilly snorted, picked up a handful of mud, and threw it at the human-sized flat surface. The sludge flew into the air, breaking apart and hitting the form in several spots.
